So I experienced my very first street ministry on the 22/09/2010 Wednesday evening with other volunteers from Wywam, PenHOP and Kawan.
We met up in Kawan at about 8.30pm. We were split into two different categories.
- Group one outreaching to the people in the street.
- Group two stays back for intercession and prayer for Group one while they are out there.
And I was in Group one. Before we start of, we were split into small groups of six, each group accompanied by at least one gentleman.
Briefed us on the Basic Rules before we took off :
- Not to offer money.
- Bless them with food if necessary but first discuss with team leader.
- Do not give them personal contact number.
- If there's any further requirement or help needed, refer them to Kawan. Direct them the way and give them Kawan's namecard.
- Let them know every Mon,Wed and Fri from 10am - 3pm, Kawan is open for Breakfast and Lunch and to Shower and Rest.
Encounter :
- Homeless family with 5 beautiful children sleeping by the corridor - The family actually has 10 children but the other 5 were with their grandmother in Sungai Petani according to the father. It's so sad that these 5 children are not attending school and without shelter. We spoke to them for awhile and then bought them some food and water.
- Homeless old man who had backache - He was very open, so we prayed for him and bought him food and water as well.
- Oldest prostitute in Chulia Street - She is in her 50s, also an addict but doesn't look like one. She is rather friendly, we sat down and spoke to her for quite sometime and prayed for her after that. Team leader made her pancake and gave her a teabag too..
- Young malay prostitute by the alley - Team leader made her pancake, she was so happy to receive it. Didn't talk much, just simple hello and thank you because she had "someone" waiting for her.
- Beggar who kissed me on my neck - I freaked out for a moment then it struck me that what they need is love.
- Jobless man asked for job offer - He was carrying a few bags so I assumed he is homeless. But anyways we told him about Kawan and asked him to seek help from there.
Have the kindest mercy on His people.
Hear their cry when they repent.
Come make the wrong things right, come make the darkness light,
Forgive them.
I am learning to be content with what I have and learn to thank Him for every little blessings..
